Mentoring newly arrived refugees

The Refugee Women's Initiative (of the International Institute of MN) is
looking for volunteers who are interested in partnering as a mentor with
newly arrived refugees. We match women with women, men with men, and
husband/wife teams with refugee couples.

Although the Refugee Women's Initiative is located in St. Paul, we have a large
number of women in Minneapolis who are looking for an American friend
and mentor. Mentors help their friends with tasks such as filling out job
applications, looking for housing or daycare, sorting through bills and
junk mail, or finding a doctor or dentist. They may also help with tutoring
English. Or they may simply introduce them to some of the community
events and resources around the city that they may not be aware of - libraries,
museums, parks, free concerts, etc. Mentors make a committment of 6
months and meet with their friend once a week for the first 6 weeks and every
other week thereafter.

Mentor training is provided - the next training is MAY 8th. If you're interested,
contact Jane Kramer, Project Coordinator at
651-647-0191 ext.348 or by email at jkramer@iimn.org. Thanks.
