Why Screen?
1. Benefits to the system:
   Help providers plan for service needs.
   Data to seek foundation / grant.
   Dollars to expand services.
   Regarding administration for out comes.
   Can this process be generalized to other groups?
2. Benefits to client:
   Positive introduction to mental health provider.
   Increase likelihood of seeking help taker.
   ID acute needs.
   Provide resource information.
   Earlier intervention is a positive thing.
   Normalizing experience.
3. Benefits to Host Family:
   Resource information.
   Education regarding mental health.
   Support.
   Realistic expectations.

Announcement
Hmong American Partnership raising money to send teacher/ mental health professional to WAT. Have money for ticket and two weeks time. Would like to stay 6 months.

Screening Tools

Depends on screening setting:
1. Harvard Research Trauma
   A. Hopkins Symptoms checklist - 18 years +
   B. Pediatric Symptom checklist - 4 years to 18 years.
      * Parent version.
      * Youth version.
   C. Ages and stages questions - 6 months to 4 years.
2. Chosen because they are free and short.
3. Other considerations.
   A. Diagnostic Interview for children - more lengthy.
   B. Rapid Assessment of refugees with mental health.
4. All these depend on:
   A. Funding.
   B. If clinics are willing to do screening.
   C. Time.
5. Where would data be stored?
6. Other:
   A. Headstart is working on screening for pre-school - Kathryn will contact them.
   B. Strengths and Difficulties (SDQ):
      * Used internationally.
      * Very quick to do.
      * Not in Hmong, but willing to help with translation.
   C. Risk Assessment important also.
      * Who will "own" data / project?
      * When will we be done with data?
   D. Vietnamese translation? Can be done if there is enough interest.
7. Needs:
   A. Training people to give test.
8. Fund provider called:
   A. Why is mental health screening necessary on arrival when people are in major crisis of change?
