Hmong Homeownership Trends: A National and Local Perspective

Friday, September 24th, 12:00-1:30

University of Minnesota, West Bank
Carlson School of Management, Room 2-215

Richard M. Todd, Vice President, and Michael Grover, Senior Quantitative Analyst, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis

Within the context of the recent Hmong influx into the Twin Cities and the new Emerging Markets Homeownership Initiative in Minnesota, this Forum will examine how a specific low-income minority population has experienced strong homeownership gains in the Twin Cities but not everywhere. Notably, in California's Central Valley, the largest concentration of Hmong-Americans in the country, Hmong homeownership has remained low. Based on a review of field studies and their own analysis of Census and other data, Michael Grover and Richard Todd will assess potential economic, policy, cultural, and demographic explanations for how such a sharp divergence in homeownership has emerged within the Hmong-American community. Leaders from the Twin Cities Hmong community will be invited to respond and offer their own insights.

If possible, please RSVP by Wednesday, September 22nd at 612-625-1551.
