Children's Film FestivalThe Asian Children's Film Festival (ACFF) is held each year to encourage children to explore their world and their heritage, and to see the beauty that comes from that diversity. It is a collaboration between AMA and its community partner, the Department of Media and Fine Arts, Metropolitan State University. The 2000 ACFF will spotlight the works of Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka, who was considered the grandfather of Japanese animation or anime, was the creator of classics such as Astro Boy and Jungle Taitei. Among the Tezuka's works that we will be presenting include Jungle Emperor Leo (Janguro Taitei), a full-length feature film and two of his award winning shorts, Legend of the Forest and Tales from a Street Corner. The Asian Children's Film Festival is an opportunity to explore the possibilities of using Asian children's films to teach Asian cultures and customs, and basic media literacy skills. In 1999 Asian Media Access was selected as one of 8 venues nationwide to showcase A Retrospective of the Legendary Studio Ghibli: The Magic of Miyazaki, Takahata, and Kondo. The legendary Hayao Miyazaki offered both children and the general public an opportunity to explore the themes of ecology, relationships, and adventure from a Japanese viewpoint. In 1998 AMA presented films from all over Asia to children and educational instructors in the Twin Cities. They then had an opportunity to discuss the films and explore the values and themes within their own context. |
