The whole film is shot mostly at nighttime, and captured Hong Kong's famous neon-glitzy scenes. The very stylish camera work, mixed with comic book images and slick visual effects, make this a modern day classic. When the film opened up in Hong Kong, it was a big surprise hit at the box office. It inspired a series of young gangster movies. Five years later, with the Young & Dangerous series in its sixth episode, the first one has become a classic. Director: Andrew Lau Wai-Keung
Rouge (1988)The critically acclaimed Rouge studies a tragic love affair from the 1930s and a more, placid, everyday one from the present. Anita Mui stars as Fleur, a courtesan who is in love with Chen-Pang (Leslie Cheung). Chen-Pang's parents are wealthy landowners who do not approve of Fleur, and thus do not allow them to marry. Fleur and Chen-Pang agree to commit suicide, in hopes that they will meet again in the afterlife. The movie then jumps to the 80's, where Fleur has returned as a ghost searching for Chen-Pang. Fleur stays with a couple during her quest to find Chen-Pang, until she realizes that he did not die with her. A subtle, anti-commercialism theme underlies Fleur's confusion of what Hong Kong has become, and what has turned out with her relationship. Director: Stanley Kwan It's Now or Never (1992)Complete with surf guitar music and wacky hair, this film is a story about an aging gigolo (Man Tat Ng) and his two daughters (Man Cheung and Cynthia Khan) playing "Teddie Girls." In the early sixties, "Teddie Girls" were gangs of bad girls with big hair and leather skirts who liked rock'n'roll and a life of crime. Cynthia is especially hilarious as a girl who pretends to know "Eagle's Claw" kung-fu whenever there's a possibility of a fight, of course her sister always bails her out. An analysis of the social and psychological factors that lead to youth crime is portrayed in this film. Talented acting and a good screenplay make this an innovative and interesting film to watch. The hand of the filmmaker is clearly revealed in the fierce action scenes and the layered narrative structure. Director: Kwok-Hei Chan Fox Hunter (1995)Yeung (Jade Leung) is an undercover cop, who has vowed to take revenge on a dangerous criminal named Yam Tung, with the help of a cowardly pimp named Chan Hong (Jordan Chan). Tung breaks into Yeung's apartment and forces her to kill her uncle. Yeung and Hong develop a love/hate relationship for each other, while they persue the criminal to the mainland. Jade Leung delivers the goods in this intelligent girls 'n' guns outing, proving that she still has what it takes to kick some serious butt. Another welcome surprise is the inclusion of an intelligent and resourceful villain, who is just plain nasty and doesn't have to prove it with maniacal laughter and random acts of violence. Out-of-control action sequences and an exciting hostage/bomb finale make this film an action lover's treat. Director: Wei Tung Lady Supercop (1993)Ling (Carina Lau) is a career-minded top cop who will do anything to track down a vicious criminal. On a jewelry robbing case, May accidentally walks into an illegal weapons deal, and then runs to Ling's for shelter. After Ling's incessant interrogation, May runs away. Mo, Ling's cousin, discovers that May has been forced to the underground. Finally, Mo and Ling join forces to confront the mob. Add in some totally unbelievable scenarios, and comic relief, and you get an action-packed, but hilarious movie. Director: Siu Hung Cheung In the Lap of God (1991)During a bungled triad heist, a 2 million dollar diamond is left behind. May (Irene Wan), a pretty office executive, accidentally comes across the missing diamond. Cop Roy Cheung has been threatened to retrieve the diamond, or else... Roy picks up on various clues, only to end up in a cat-and-mouse chase in civil war-torn Burma, where he and May dodge mortar blasts to solve this mysterious puzzle. With early appearances by Francis Ng and Man So, and parts filmed in Thailand, this is an action-packed adventure and romance set in Southeast Asia's jungle. Director: Kin Lo |
