Iron Monkey

Doctor Yang is a kindly, beloved healer by day and, unknown to all but his assistant, the "Robin Hood"-like vigilante known as Iron Monkey by night, stealing from the corrupt rich and giving to the deserving poor. The governor (the epitome of the corrupt rich) is eager to stop Iron Monkey, and when Wong Kei Ying passes through town along with his son, the very young Wong Fei- Hung, and reveals himself to be an expert martial artist, the governor kidnaps young Fei-Hung in order to force his father to bring his foe to what he likes to call "Justice". This film is filled with so much non-stop kung fu spectacle it's almost beyond words... you might think you've seen it all, but if you haven't seen Iron Monkey you're gauranteed to be gasping in amazement at virtually every battle, all leading up to an astonishing three-way fight on top of a bunch of tall poles that are rapidly catching fire. It's also fun to see the young Wong Fei-Hung in action (in spite of his youth, he's already a long way towards becoming the Fei-Hung we know) and learning where he got some of his trademark moves (so THAT'S where the "no shadow kick" came from!). In fact, it's not too much to say that if an official list were compiled of the top ten best martial arts (kung fu) movies, Iron Monkey would deserve an honored place on that list. Miss it, and you'll be very sorry.

Starring Donnie Yen, Yu Rong Guang, Yen Shi-Kwan, Si Man, Lee Fai and Yuen Shun-Yi. Produced by Tsui Hark and directed by Yuen Wo Ping.
