Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung as warriors from the respective sides run into each other and are about to fight it out when they are forced to join forces to defend themselves against warrriors from a third group. Starts out seeming like a simple action story, doesn't it? Well... action yes, simple no. An allegory about war and peace is buried within this film, and it isn't that hard to find, but it never settles for being just one thing, and every time time you think you've got it figured out, it changes. Yuen Biao runs into a mysterious cavern and meets a mysterious martial arts master whose skills he wants to learn in order to win the war... then ghosts, spirits and wizards enter the story... and of course there's plenty of comedy... and then Sammo turns up again, this time as a strange, 100-year old monk chained to a boulder, who claims he chained himself. If you try to get a firm grasp on Zu, it'll just drive you crazy, but just sit back and enjoy the ride and you'll have the time of your life. Fantastic special effects, some of the best swordfights this side of the "Swordsman" films, hilarious humor, great performances by great stars... all in the movie that broke director Tsui Hark into the genuine big time. You can't ask for much more in a movie than what you get in Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain, and even if you've already seen it, there's so much going on that there are bound to be things you missed before.
