Donald Sutherland stars in the role of a famous American director who comes to Beijing to make a film about China’s last emperor. Circumstances then make it impossible for him to finish his film. Meanwhile, he becomes the subject of a documentary about the making of the film, and an unlikely friendship is formed between the director and the camera man of the documentary. The director has a premonition of his death, and asks his new friend to stage an elaborate funeral for him. He collapses right after making the request, and the strangest funeral preparations you could imagine are set in motion. And that's when the fun begins...
