The Human Comedy blends together a quartet of loosely adapted and updated Confucian moral fables in a sensitive and frequently funny story of modern Taipei. A sales girl lives in a fantasy world, missing the life going on around her. A-xing rehearses an avant-garde play for a director dying of AIDS. Asked to perform a nude scene, he must choose between satisfying his demanding director and facing his conservative mother, who will be in the audience. A couple is forced, by lack of space and roaches, on a comedic search for a new flat. And Darren must rescue his ex-wife from a raging typhoon. As self-interest battles self-sacrifice, Hung Hung shows us the quiet miracles of everyday life.
