Twin Bracelets
Dir. Yu -Shan Huang, Hong Kong, 1990 ,100 min.

In a remote fishing village, two girls, best friends, struggle to remain committed to their declaration of love in their tradition-bound society. A moving, ultimately tragic film, Twin Bracelets is remarkable for its portrayal of an independent woman's commitment to her love.

7:00 pm
Made in Hong Kong (tentative)
Dir. Fruit Chan Kwoh, Hong Kong, 1997, 108 min

Young outcasts on the periphery of the law populate this gritty look at Hong Kong society. Unique in its harsh realism and its use of non-professional actors, Made in Hong Kong is a compelling antidote to the romanticized heroics of most HK film.

9:00 pm
Beijing Bastards
Dir. Zhang Yuan, People's Republic of China/Hong Kong,1993

Considered China's first independent film, the also controversial Beijing Bastards depicts the disillusioned youth of '90's Beijing, presenting an underground, grimy, drugged-out, rock 'n roll China rarely seen. A remarkably raw presentation of purposeless lives.

Special Jury Prize: Locarno Film Festival
Jury Award: Singapore Film Festival

11:00 pm
A Queer Story
Dir. Shu Kei, Hong Kong, 1997, 111 min. 35mm

Considered to be one of the "gayest" films to come out of Hong Kong, A Queer Story presents the dilemma of the closeted Law Ka Sing, a 46-year-old marriage counselor who is on the brink of marrying his childhood girlfriend, an option that seems easier than living an out life with his night-life driven boyfriend Sunny. An engagingly comic film, melodramatic but optimistic.
