Vive l'Amour
Director: Tsai Ming-liang, Taiwan, 35mm, 100 min., 1996Three young strangers, two men and a woman, inadvertently share keys to the same near-vacant apartment in downtown Taipei. Director Tsai Ming-liang distills this farcical premise into an austere depiction of the insistent loneliness of urban life, where liberatory acts -- here, sneaking a kiss or rolling a melon bowling ball-like - are performed with great stealth, usually behind closed doors.
