Considered China's first independent film, the also controversial Beijing Bastards depicts the disillusioned youth of '90's Beijing, presenting an underground, grimy, drugged-out, rock 'n roll China rarely seen. A remarkably raw presentation of purposeless lives.

A powerful and disturbing two-character drama on the nature of power, sex, and repression, East Palace, West Palace is the first filmic attempt at depicting gay life in today's China. Director Zhang Yuan has crafted a stagey yet compelling, sometimes brutal, and characteristically raw, story of the interrogation of a harshly detained gay writer imprisoned for cruising in a public park. Currently banned in China, this film is slated for a commercial release in the U.S.in September 1998.
