9:50 pm
My New Friends
Tsai Ming-Liang, Taiwan, 1995,VHS, 56 minutes

Shot for Taiwanese television, My New Friends documents the lives of two men living with HIV. Director Tsai Ming-liang befriended the two gentleman and promised them anonymity. The interviews are strikingly candid, covering many of the diverse aspects of life with HIV. Too formally interesting to be mere case studies -- each of the two sequences have lovely visual codas -- to be mere case studies, this work is just as documentarily rich. Marked by the care of the filmmaker and the candor of the subjects, My New Friends allows voices to men society would deny.
