Tobacco Prevention PSAs and VideoTobacco Prevention PSAsEducational PSAs, completed in 1998Asian Media Access produced 4 Tobacco Prevention PSAs, including 1 multi-languages, 3 in Spanish, to assist youth to say "NO" to Smoking. Bicultural Tobacco-Control Video Program/Discussion Guide for Pan Asian YouthEducational Video, in productionThe project involves the production of bicultural educational Video Program /Discussion Guide in tobacco prevention & tobacco control issues for Pan Asian youth and families. The bicultural Video Program accompanied by the written Discussion Guide is working to improve the communication of tobacco issues in families who are disadvantaged economically and socially. By developing culturally respectful new resource, it will assist Pan Asian adults in discussing the difficult issues with youth about the tobacco prevention & control in a setting that they are comfortable with. Or vise versa, the youth tries to make the point to their parents regarding health hazard of smoking. The bicultural Video Program /Discussion Guide provides a way into such discussions. The project is just wrapped up for the development of the bicultural educational Discussion Guide. During the process, we collected various data, such as percentage of tobacco usage among Pan Asians, testimonials, stories, and dilemmas arising from the parent and youth focus groups. Parents and youth from all Asian Pacific cultural groups talked about basic tobacco problems at home and in school, and "what works" from their different points of view. These discussions focused on four common problems thought to be universally important to youth from diverse cultural backgrounds: family member smokes, peer pressure, media influence, and tobacco control policy. Focusing on each of these problems, parents and youth described how they defined the problem, and concerns associated with the problem, and positive examples of problem solving used in families and schools. All the materials were compiled for the Discussion Guide. The Discussion Guide with community-based, culturally relevant materials also can be used as an integrated package by school teachers, family educators, and others working with Pan Asian families along with other concerned issues.
