What About Us (WAU) originated around January of 2003, from a youth group at Asian Media Access. Consisting of 5 lead members, though the group may be small, their dream is grand.
The mission of the group
is to change community perceptions about gender inequalities, to prevent
sexual violence in the community and to develop a national youth network
to address
such issues. The project name is meant to draw attention to the inequality
between girls and boys inherent in Asian culture. What About Us is looking
to keep the essence of the culture, but eradicate the demeaning treatment
towards women and girls.
What About Us is trying to raise awareness of sexual violence in the pan Asian community, which is a task that requires more than intervention, but also prevention. The group’s aim is to go to the root of the issue and stop it before it can even begin. Prevention is the key to the group’s message.
WAU also wants to celebrate the achievements of local and national pan Asian women and girls.
